Twin point oil temperature gauge
Hi. I own a Mini 40 (twin point) which has an oil temperature gauge. The temperature reading has never been shown to rise above about 80 C, which I guess is a little on the low side!!! If anyone has any advice on what the possible problem could be, then itd be much appreciated. I dont fancy buying loads of bits and pieces in a trial-and-error effort to get it working properly. Thanks guys, Alex

MPI Temperature Gauge
Anyone fitted a water temperature gauge to a MPI (like the old classic temperature gauge) If so how did you wire it. Thanks in anticipation.

Temperature gauge woes
Hi,
I have a 1275 MG Metro engine in my mini based kit car. It has a Mk1 Metro instrument cluster. The temp gauge reads very low, ie when the car is hot its barely reading a tenth of the way up the gauge.
I think it is suppled via a voltage stabaliser. This seems to work because the fuel gauge (also using stabalised volts) works fine.
I don't know if different temp sensor were fitted, with different resitance range. Alternatively, I guess the sende could be faluty. I can measure its resistance.
Does anyone know what the correct resistance over the range should be, or offer any ideas?
Paul

FOR SALE: TIM mechanical oil pressure and water temperature gauges
I have recently purchased a Smith's dual gauge and hence am selling my TIM oil pressure and water temperature gauges. Both are of the mechanical type (not electronic) and are in good condition. They come complete with all the connectors and piping for an A series engine, together with fitting instructions. They are both approx. 2 years old.
The oil pressure gauge is an orange needle on a black face with white lettering (0-80PSI) amd a yellow circle, and the water temp. gauge is a white needle on a black face with white lettering (40-120 oC).
Both can be seen working on my car in Lincolnshire.
Cost £22-25 each but looking for £10 each plus £3 postage. Was going to put on e-bay but my camera is not downloading at the moment!
Thanks for reading.

Temperature Gauge
I have installed Temperature gauge 13H4460MG in my 1963 850 mini. Is it possible to tune the gauge to the sender unit? Currently the gauge is showing hot when the actual temperature is normal.

Are you running the gauge from the voltage stabiliser? If you run it from the full 12v supply it will read high.

Mental coolant!
oh and no, the gauge in the car shows the car to be at normal temperature

fuel and temp guage problems
thanks for the reply i am just looking at that website now, i have fixed my fuel guage so now its just my temperature gauge that is not working at all.

cold heater
Mine was also blowing cold air - found out my lower radiator hose was also cold and the temperature gauge was glowing red - I just ordered a new radiator.

Thermostat Housing + Temporature gauge sensor, any alternatives?
Ive got a 1964 Mk1 with a Thermostatic Housing that is crumbling to pieces. I want to replace it, but the only one I can see is without the hole for the temperature gauge sensor. Any ideas of what I can do - is there a replacement part for another model that I could use, or another place I can fit the the sensor? Thanks

Hey people..i need some help with new dash and fitting a harness..
Hey on my mini i have a wood dash with a centre speedometer and on the left side of that there is the small temperature gage and on the right the oil. Both are alot smaller. All the 3 clock dashes ive found on here all seem t have the same size wholes cut out,can anyone please help. Also im looking at getting the 4 point rally harness, where do you bolt it in. Thanks alot people..hope to here from you .

What's the normal water temperature?
I wouldn't worry too much about the temperature gauge reading a bit high - they're notoriously variable across different cars. What's more important is that the temperature stays constant, whether driving fast or stuck in traffic. If the needle stays more or less where it is, I would say you probably don't have anything to worry about. However, to be on the safe side you might want to get the running temperature checked using one of those hand-held infra-red detectors.

just a quick one
Do you mean warmer on the temperature gauge? I wouldn't have thought the exhaust would make a noticeable difference. More likely is the carb is running too lean - this can affect the engine temop significantly

Running temperature
Is it getting up to normal running temperture (ie. nearly up to the white mark on the temperature gauge)?
Also, no battery/alternator issues are there - loose fan belt?
On SPi's if the engine doesn't get up to temperture will be "running on choke" until they do. If the engine is getting hot but the temp sender unit is buggered (reading low) then the ECU will think the engines cold (although it isn't) and keep it running "on choke" therefore not the right mixture, so it'll run like a dog basically.
Also if the battery isn't charging properly (or is duff) then the voltage coming out gets lower and lower. There will be enough to keep the engine running and ECU operating, but the drop in voltage will "mess up" the actual signals being sent back to the ECU, again making it think it's running cold hen it isn't. Good indication of this would be letting it idle til the temperature gauge gets up to normal (you should notice the idle speed drop from 1000rpm don to about 800rpm when it's warm) then turn the headlights on. If after a couple of minutes you notice the temperature gauge start to drop or the idle speed inexplicably rise back up to in excess of 1000 rpm then it could be a voltage drop issue.
Might not have anything to do with either of these - a leak somewhere in the induction side would be more likely, just something to be aware of thats all. ECU's are good when they work, but so many things can scupper them and cause really crap running, and those faults are often hard to find.

Try shorting it by fitting a paper clip to the spade connector (that's attached to the thermostat housing sensor) and touching it against the engine block.
Then with the ignition on, your temperature gauge should read full and if that's the case then you probably just need a new thermostat sensor.
If it still doesn't read then it generally confirms there's a problem with the temperature gauge. You can do the same trick with the fuel gauge too.

Magnolia Dials
I want to fit magnolia dials to my project. However the prices for Smiths speedos and tachos are a little beyond me. So what I was wondering was, will getting the magnolia backings our host sells make for a nice finish that will match some of Smiths smaller dials (clock, ammeter, oil/water pressure)? and is it possible to get chrome (effect) bezels for the existing dials? Also do I need any senders/cables to fit oil pressure / temperature, ammeter/volmeter gauges?

mini timing
Glad you got the timing sorted; although annoying, having the distributor spindle inserted wrongly will not in itself cause overheating - whereas incorrectly set timing can.
Minis do seem to suffer from overheating - however, if you're saying it's hot based on the gauge, bear in mind that temperature gauges are not the most accurate thing in the world, they just give you a warm fuzzy feeling when they say the right thing. It's sometimes a good idea, if you have access to a non-contact infra red thermometer, to measure the cylinder head temperature adjacent to the thermostat. It could be the sender / gauge or voltage stabilizer (depending on the model you've got).

Fuel Gauge not working
Hi All.
The fuel gauge on my daughters 1988 Mini Designer is not working. I have removed the Green wire with Black tracer from the sender unit and with the engine running I have put a test light across from it to earth, the light does not come on. Looking at the wiring chart for this model the wire goes to the gauge and then onto the Voltage Regulator and appears to share the same track on the printed circuit board as the Temperature Gauge which is working. Any ideas as to why there is no power going to the sender.
Regards Paddy

Electric Fuel Pump
I have an electronic fuel pump on my Positive earth 1959 Morris Mini Minor for reliability I recently installed a Smiths temperature gauge and the pump keeps stopping and not recharging unless I disconnect the temp gauge. With this in mind I have fitted a Bi-metal voltage regulator as fitted to post 1964 cars hoping this would resolve the problem but hasn't! I still have to disconnecte the gauge to get the fuel pump working. I know the easy answer would be not to have the gauge but I would like to resolve the problem anyone got any ideas.
